6-Day Triathlon Training

“It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it.”

This full week of triathlon coaching, with fully insured and qualified trainers – an IRONMAN and British Triathlon Federation Certified Coach, and an IRONMAN competitor and Olympic Marathon Runner – is individually tailored to aspirant triathletes. Participants are given a fitness assessment on day one to establish strengths and skills, and then a comprehensive training plan is created, encompassing daily cycling, running and swimming, plus gym time; strength and core conditioning;  and fun team and individual challenges.

Cycling:

The aspirant triathletes have a choice between carbon or aluminium mountain and/or road bikes. Progressive rides are varied by terrain and distance, from rolling flats to mountain rides from 50km up to 120km. Participants can even tackle the Puerto del Sol, with its 1085m climb and more than 120km of cycling. Full vehicle support is provided.

To improve bike skills and endurance in situ, Chili Tri has an outdoor terrace with more than a dozen spin bike static trainers.  Chili Tri also demonstrates the Zwift App set up to the triathletes-in-training, which participants can recreate at home to race against other cyclists worldwide, online, in real time.

Running:

Running drills, technique work and tempo runs are guided by the expert coaches. Run sessions are aimed at improving technique, endurance and speed and are led by Olympian and IRONMAN triathlete, Jess Draskau Petersson. Sessions can be on a 400 metre track, or on the road, or on mountain trails and are suitable for all levels.

Swimming:

Swimming sessions, with video analysis to improve stroke power, take place at the Competa Olympic-size swimming pool (a short walk away from the training centre), or in the open water in lakes or the sea, with kayak support. One-on-one swim coaching is available in the Triathlon Training Centre rooftop Endless Pool..

Gym Training:

Chili Tri has an outdoor rooftop gym with the following available equipment to meet all training needs: Crossfit rack and equipment; Squat Rack; Concept II Rower; dumbbells and barbells; ViPRs; Bosu Ball & Swiss Balls; resistance bands; boxing gloves, pads, speed ball punchbag and skipping ropes; Agility Ladder & Cones; circuit training cards; 8kg, 12kg & 16kg Kettlebells; Battle Ropes; TRX suspension trainer.

As well as the expert training Chili Tri provides, it also arranges free evening seminars for camp participants, including a “Meet The Coach” question and answer session with Olympian Jess Draskau Petersson; details of the best nutrition plan to follow for triathlete training, and mental enhancement hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis and guided imagery from The Beat Retreat in Competa, to build muscle memory, strength, stamina, and hone technique as well as  eliminate aches and pains.

At Chili Tri, even though triathlon training is a serious business, there is always time for fun, and racing against each other to set personal bests. The Triathlon Training Centre is perched right on the top of the hill overlooking the tumbling, white-washed town of Competa, giving fantastic views while training, but also providing the perfect sprint hill right outside the door. The ‘Chili Challenge’, which is 1km straight up, can be done on bike or on foot, every day if participants want to, to see how the training is improving their speed and endurance. There are quite some times to beat!

Above the training centre is an astroturf mountain top stadium, ideal for a five-a-side knock about, or track running in the clouds.

At the end of the 6-day triathlon training Chili Tri organises a mini Chili triathlon. This involves a 750m open water swim with kayak support, followed by a 20 km cycle ride and a 5 km run, with a cup at the end of it to take home and hopefully be the first of many to adorn a mantelpiece.
