Holidays

“Recovery is a process. It takes time. It takes patience. It takes everything you’ve got.”

Holidays at the PTSD Retreat Competa are funded by international charities, foundations, organisations, military units and police, first responder and health care worker welfare funds, and are specifically aimed at helping people with PTSD regain their lust for life, and restore calm in their body and their mind.

The holidays are tailored to people who would benefit most from the facilities – be it serving and former military personnel, former and serving police officers, or first responders or health care workers from anywhere in the World. While no medical facilities are onsite, counsellors and alternative health therapists are, and first class medical facilities are available nearby.

The PTSD Retreat Competa at Finca Los Pinos, just a few kilometres outside the tumbling, whitewashed hillside town of Competa, and 16 kilometres from the Costa Del Sol coastline, can accommodate up to 20 people at a time (22 if small children are included) year-round.

Groups of eight people or more can enjoy exclusive use of the facilities. Accommodation ranges from double and twin rooms, to individual log cabins, to a pool suite and a bunk house cottage.

The PTSD Retreat Competa has a main building with three guest rooms and bathrooms; a well-equipped open-plan guest kitchen; two very comfortable lounge areas and a large recreation room, all with log burning fires for the Spring and Autumn months. Outside, al fresco dining areas are on the terrace of the main house and also set out around the heated swimming pool next to the open air BBQ. The pool is surrounded by sun beds and hammocks and there is a treehouse pool bar above the swimming area.

The grounds of the PTSD Retreat Competa are sprawling and shaded, and allow for plenty of personal space. There is an outdoor terrace under the tree canopy for holistic activities and for visiting entertainers to perform; a children’s play area with a large enclosed trampoline and a play house; a secluded massage sala which has a gorgeous hillside view, and little walkways through the cacti and firs for all to explore and enjoy.

Groups of guests can decide if they wish to self-cater, or enjoy a fully-catered menu, including continental breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and cakes and evening meals of Moroccan, Spanish, English, Italian and South African cuisine.

At the PTSD Retreat Competa there is no schedule of activities. Unless guests are joining a specific activity week (such as a cycling, triathlon, trekking or other challenge)  they are free to choose whatever they wish to do each day from the range of activities offered. They can be given an individual budget to spend on activity days out, holistic treatments and classes.

Some activities come to the PTSD Retreat! Local bands, singers and speakers provide entertainment on the outdoor terrace, and yoga, Reiki, hypnotherapy, acupuncture and massage therapists offer seminars and free trial sessions to Retreat guests.  On family weeks there are also child entertainers provided, and childminders and nannies are available.

Competa itself offers a whole host of sporting and exercise activities, from IRONMAN triathlon training, trekking and kayaking, to cycling and canyoning, dirt biking or potholing, or fixed activities such as Muay Thai Kick Boxing, football, badminton, tennis and many more. In winter skiing in the Sierra Nevada is just 90 minutes away. More sedentary pursuits are also available thanks to the skills of local artisans – bird watching, painting, wine tasting, memoir writing workshops and picture framing being just a few.
